Dear all,
Are you a member of whatsapp groups which you should have left?
Have they just piled up and you feel trapped with no way out?
I am sorry I can’t help you. You will be stuck until death, unless it is legislated that families inherit whatsapp groups and they feel your pain.
I joke…
This week we have a couple of videos, one around the situation in Sri Lanka, the second providing context and history to Mauritian agriculture and politics. Things need to change and evolve for both countries.
Anyway enjoy reading

Sri lanka, a warning sign for Mauritius?

Thoughts on Inheritance and Money
What problems do we inherit?
Also 70% of families lose their wealth in the 2nd Generation.
What did I inherit?
My father is a direct descendant of the Rama Brothers
The Rama Brothers (descendants of Immigrant Rama Kadam Deshmukh who originated from Deodali Maharashtra), were the first Mauritians of Indian origin, to become owners of Sugar Estates in 1918 at a time when only the white sugar oligarchy owned and controlled sugar estates.
My attempts at becoming a sugar baron have not come to fruition, because of another family drama. The issues with his inheritance became my inheritance. Through his work and sacrifice he left his children a foundation and an opportunity for Chemin Grenier. I carry that on with my own money and it is now generating wealth, and opportunities for Chemin Grenier.
Inheritance is a prickly subject, I have seen it destroy families, it can also enable families.
The intangible inheritance
There is something else which I inherited which does not have a dollar value, our families shape how we operate. My father demonstrated a great determination to overcome his obstacles, my grandfather showed us the value of intellectual curiosity. I hope I inherited these qualities.
The government inheritance
Governments will inherit from previous governments, and have the luxury of blaming the previous government for existing problems. Note this should have a shelf life of one term. Whoever takes over next will inherit a large government debt, a disenfranchised population, a growing gap between rich and poor, and what appear to be white elephants.
What my children will inherit
Now when it is time for my passing, my children will probably not be interested in the finest curated collection of books in Mauritius, nor a music collection featuring a range of world music. I hope they will inherit the lessons and teaching from mine and my partner’s experience. Enough to get started in life and build out a life.
Mauritius, Sugar and the links to common market.
The 1970’s were an important time for Mauritian industry and a pertinent question was raised then, what do we do with the monoculture of sugarcane. Now we have a number of industries including tourism, but we lack resilience.
Lyric reference
Mick Hucknall broke boundaries in a different direction, his band had hit after hit. The album New Flame was one of first albums I ever heard.
Building the conversation.
I write these, as an intellectual exercise, trying to understand the world, and it’s need to change. Adrock said once “I’d rather be a hypocrite than the same person forever.”
There is a need to change and a need to practice that change.
About me
This is where I put annoying descriptors, but simply I like looking at problems, fixing them, and asking questions. Outside of this I love film, music and books. I can be found on twitter and instagram and linkedin.
