Dear All,
Like everyone I was watching in shock the police torture videos.
The response from the authorities is lacking. I have seen no press conference from the minister in charge but another appearance at a cultural event. Policing is a difficult job, and no country is perfect, see the US.
I go to London next week for a conference, away from my fiancée, family and dogs. In a post covid world, I discovered a new life. I will miss them.
The budget has been done

Anyway happy reading.

Parenting as a partnership
My father taught me how to iron a shirt, I can cook, I can clean, I try and support my partner a 100% behind her goal, she is amazingly talented. There is also the idea of move and cover, the hope is should we blessed with children, there will be times where our businesses will require a bit more than the 9-5 and we can cover for each other. Also that we realise and nurture those children to worldly and adventurous, and understanding the search for meaning.
Like Mike Tyson said
“Everybody has a plan until they are punched in the face”
I am sure any planning or intentions will change, but children have no choice in being born.
Policing ,Torture, Checks and Balances
There are videos circulating with a naked man being tortured with what appear to be cattle prods, it is alleged to be a police interrogation. More videos are circulating. Is this a left over of bygone period in colonial policing or is this new?
Torture is when somebody in an official capacity inflicts severe mental or physical pain or suffering on somebody else for a specific purpose. Sometimes authorities torture a person to extract a confession for a crime, or to get information from them.
The cattle prod has a history
The taser’s predecessor, the cattle prod, has a long history as a torture device, used in regimes such as Baathist Iraq during interrogations of political prisoners. Electrocution sticks are an effective torture weapon, since they can be administered repeatedly to the victim without injury or diminished effectiveness. They generally leave no mark or other evidence of their use.
Now the last question is what happens to all those cases which those police officers were involved in.
To resolve, Mauritius needs to go to first principles and understand what sort of police force it wants. There are ways to restore trust in a police force, which from my personal experience is not good enough. An independent elected police commissioner will help remove the politics and ensure a focus on outcomes and improving the force.
To the police at Trou aux Biches, you are welcome to train with me in the morning, and welcome to help support US Trou aux Biches.
Song lyric
KRS One, a legendary MC from the glory days of hip hop released this song around police brutality and racism. It is apt.
Building the conversation.
I write these, as an intellectual exercise, trying to understand the world, and it’s need to change. Adrock said once “I’d rather be a hypocrite than the same person forever.”
There is a need to change and a need to practice that change.
About me
This is where I put annoying descriptors, but simply I like looking at problems, fixing them, and asking questions. Outside of this I love film, music and books. I can be found on twitter and instagram and linkedin.
